PLEASE NOTE: UL Certification only applies to illuminated signs, as the regulations are for electrical components only. We offer both UL-Certified and Non-Certified illuminated sings, so please be sure to discuss options and pricing with our sales rep before finalizing your order.

How Did Custom Logo Signs Become UL-Certified?

Achieving UL Certification is no small feat, and it is small wonder that such few sign fabricators are able to accomplish it. In order to become an official UL-Certified sign shop we had to follow their globally-accepted guidelines, seek approval of each fabrication technique, meet extensive quality and safety standards, and each of our UL-Certified sign fabricators had to go through rigorous training, exhaustive testing, and repeated inspections. In addition to the initial UL-Certification training and approval, our fabricators and our facility must constantly maintain the required standards, and are subject to frequent inspections, reviews, and quality control initiatives.

We took this initiative upon ourselves and invested the time and resources necessary to provide our customers with a higher level of trust and confidence in our signage. Our clients have always looked to us for the most unique logo signs, with artistic elements and high-end finishes. Now they can also come to us for one-of-a-kind electric/illuminated signs, which, although still 100% custom and unique to their brand, are able to be UL Certified and listed for absolute safety compliance.

Common Questions About Our UL-Certified Signs

  1. DO WE REALLY CERTIFY OUR SIGNS IN-HOUSE?
Yes! Don't be fooled by other sign makers who might claim to offer UL Certified signs, but are really just reselling signs they bought from overseas or other sign shops. Custom Logo Signs is one of very few fabrication shops with IN-HOUSE fabricators who are certified directly by UL, and have the authority to create electrically illuminated signs from scratch, label them with official UL Certified stickers, and document them in the UL Certified Product Database.
  2. ARE UL CERTIFIED SIGNS SAFER?
Generally speaking, yes they are safer because they have been proven to comply with UL's extensive, rigorous safety standards and regulations. That is not to say that other signs are unsafe, but only that the fabricator is not in the UL database, and the sign itself has not been tested, verified, labeled and documented in accordance with the UL safety procedures. The LED lights and power supplies are the same for our UL and non-UL signs, however with a UL sign the power supply must be enclosed within the sign, so it requires some additional 120v wiring, a junction box, conduit connectors, and a hinged frame system to access it. That process encloses/seals the electrical hardware upon completion so it can be certified without the likelihood of accidental (or intentional) modifications during installation.
  3. IS UL CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW?
No, consumers are not required to purchase signs that are UL certified. However it is very common (especially for businesses) to only purchase UL certified products to more confidently reduce the risk of damage, injury, fire, or other issues that can come from signs and other electrical products that do not meet UL Certification safety standards.
  4. WHAT ABOUT UNLABELED SIGNS?
Fortunately for all of our customers, there is definitely a trickle-down effect with our other signs, even if you do not pay for UL certification. First, our sign fabricators went through high-level training with regards to lighting, wiring and electrical components. Second, in order to maintain our status as a UL Certified sign shop, our facility has to undergo regular inspections to meet the quality and safety standards imposed by the UL organization. All of this has enhanced our knowledge and capabilities, and positive influenced how ALL of our signs are made, regardless of whether they become UL listed or not.
  5. IS THERE AN ADDITIONAL COST FOR A UL-CERTIFIED SIGN?
Yes, the process to map, build, document, photograph inspect and label a UL-certified sign is more involved, requires additional labor, and requires the direct involvement of our Warehouse Manager. There are also some additional electrical components, as well as a custom hinged framing system to access the electrical panel. The exact charge may vary based on the size and complexity of the sign, so please contact us for a quote.
  6. DOES IT TAKE LONGER TO MAKE A UL-CERTIFIED SIGN?
Yes, due to the additional steps, inspections, and documentation required, as well as coordinating schedules with our Warehouse Manager and Lead Sign Fabricator, we typically add 1-2 weeks to the estimated lead time for a UL-Certified sign. Your sales rep can give you an estimated ETA for a new project.
  7. DO I NEED A UL CERTIFIED INSTALLER?
Although we do not currently install signs ourselves (with a few local exceptions) we do highly recommend that you use a UL Certified electrician to install any hard-wired electrical sign, otherwise any safety measures we took to fabricate the sign at UL standards could easily be rendered meaningless by unsafe/improper installation.
