Just as you may have guessed, the printed grind patterns are essentially a high-resolution photo print of an actual Nicholas Yust grind pattern. Nicholas has done this by creating several panels of his hand-crafted grind patterns and having them professionally photographed and converted to a digital file. After much trial and error and countless tests, we came up with a unique method of printing these images onto metal to give them the appearance of a real grind pattern - with the seemingly impossible precision, clean lines, clever balance, and artistic appeal that Nicholas is known for.
With that in mind, it is important to recognize that perhaps the most impressive feature of an actual grind pattern by Nicholas Yust is the life, depth and motion - as you walk by or shift from side to side, the light catches the grooves of the pattern and moves, dances, and creates a holographic effect that cannot be duplicated in a photograph. However, Nicholas has personally attended each photo session to ensure the ideal lighting scenario and contrast with each photo to make the printed versions as life-like as possible.

Also Available: Sanded Metal Finish
If you would like to tone it down even one step further by simply going with a natural, sanded metal finish (similar to the brushed finish commonly used on appliances and kitchen treatments) then that is absolutely an option as well. We still ensure a spectacular finish with crisp, clean cuts and/or prints, vibrant colors, and a variety of styles and finishes. Here are a few examples of signs we have done without a grind pattern:
